They remember eighty-four points sitting on the eighteenth tee like a pile of chips nobody could push over. They remember the scoreboard. But the golf was almost dead even, and the whole thing turned on eight or nine putts that took four seconds each.

The fifth green

Four holes of the championship match, four halves. Nobody could get down in fewer than anybody else. That is how the carry works — nothing is lost, it just sits there and grows.

By the time they walked onto the fifth, thirty points had piled up on the putting alone.

Grit never putted. They holed out from off the green.

Thirty for the pile, twelve for the hole. Then they walked to the sixth and did it again — both teams made three, Glory needed two putts, Grit needed none.

Glory’s answer

It was better golf than they get credit for. On the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth they hit it closer than Grit three greens running — same score every time, one putt to Grit’s two.

It bought them twenty-four points. Grit’s two hole-outs bought forty-eight.

Same skill.
Twice the money.

Because Grit’s came when the pile was deep. That is the cruelty of the carry. It does not care how well you putt. It cares when.

The Duel, and five holes nobody could win

Different match, same story, different men. Five separate holes, Z and Spence could not beat Foose and Larry with the clubs. Matched them shot for shot, walked onto the green level, nothing in it.

They won four of those five anyway.

The twelfth is the one to sit with. Grit had taken thirty points on the previous hole and the place was still ringing. They matched Glory again on the twelfth — no separation, nothing in it — and then made the putt.

Forty-two points across two holes, and only thirty of it came from actual golf.

The eighteenth, which everyone remembers wrong

Eighty-four points. The biggest hole this thing has ever staged. Both teams made five. Both got down in a single putt. Neither man missed, neither man blinked. It halved, and the pile was split down the middle like a bar tab.

Twelve men stood on that green believing the Cup was live.

It was not. Glory needed forty-nine and a half to draw level, and the whole pot was worth forty-two to them. Hole it, take every last point on the biggest hole in Cup history, and they still finish seven and a half short.

The Cup had been decided back on the fifth green,
and nobody on the property knew it.

The reckoning

Across four days both teams putted almost identically. Twenty-one holes were settled on the green rather than the card — same score, better putting. Grit won thirty-six points that way.

Glory won thirty-seven.

They just did it on the wrong holes.

How the four days ran

For all of that, nobody could get away. Glory took the opening day. By Thursday lunchtime it was level to the point.

Then Friday arrived carrying 489 of the tournament’s 923 points — more than half the Cup in a single afternoon.
